The Meiningers had set out for Russia seeking to improve their lives, to escape the political and religious turmoil often surrounding their otherwise picturesque German homes and villages. They dreamed of the faraway place awaiting them. They colored the soil beneath the vast steppe rich and black in their minds ready to be tilled. And there would be a neat little house ready to receive them. In their wildest dreams, they could not have imagined what actually awaited their arrival. There were no houses, no fields nothing but grass as far as the eye could see. It was almost evening; they were hungry, wet and cold and felt like orphaned children.

These German immigrants and their descendants civilized this bleak Russian frontier, converted the harsh steppe into fields of waving grain dotted with wind-driven flour mills, and in this isolated place, developed a culture that was uniquely their own. They survived savage attacks of marauding tribes, the unpredictable often harsh climate, and the vagaries of tsarist edicts. Sigrid tells the fascinating story of these remarkable people in The Volga Germans.

The Volga Germans is the second volume in Sigrid Weidenweber's trilogy The Volga Flows Forever. Catherine, the first volume, brings to life the fascinating historical character of Catherine the Great who invited her native countrymen to settle the Russian frontier. In the final volume, From Gulag to Freedom, she follows the Volga Germans through the hardships of collectivization and deportation during the Soviet years to finally immigrate to the San Joaquin Valley of Central California.

The Volga Germans The Volga Flows Forever Book 2 eBook Sigrid Weidenweber

In this Volume 2 of the trilogy "The Volga Flows Forever," Sigrid Weidenweber has once again done an extraordinary job of writing the history of the Volga Germans and their communities made possible by Catherine the Great following her invitation in 1763 which brought them to Russia. Again, I have read several historical books about the Volga Germans which I found to be very informative and well-written. What Sigrid Weidenweber has done with her historical fiction approach is to bring the reader into the midst of a powerful, at times triumphant, at times catastrophic, and always gripping account of what successive generations of the depicted family experienced. She brought me right into the middle of their lives. I was living in their community and I was in the midst of their struggles in a way which was unbelievably powerful for me. I could scarcely put the book down, and several planned pieces of work got put off so I wouldn't have to put it down. At this moment, I haven't read Volume 3 of the trilogy yet, but I will be doing that immediately. I simply had no idea when I selected these books the enormity of the impact they would have on me, Sigrid Weidenweber has done an extraordinary job of telling the story of the Volga German communities in Russia. It is a story which needed to be told, and which many more people need to understand. Thanks to Sigrid Weidenweber, that has happened. I, for one, am profoundly grateful to her for doing that!

The Volga Germans The Volga Flows Forever Book 2 eBook Sigrid Weidenweber Reviews

The middle book in the Volga Trilogy tells the heartbreaking stories of the Germans who came to the Volga River Valley expecting to find houses and ground ready to till; instead, they found nothing and had to subsist on literally nothing. How they managed to form a life and villages is an heroic tale. Again, Weidenweber weaves historical facts into her engaging story lines to create a wonderful book about our German ancestors.
The Volga Germans spans nearly 200 years and reveals how German immigrants developed towns and systematically cultivated the ancient, grassy steppes of SW Russia. Following a family's history through several generations we begin to appreciate the extreme hardships and sacrifices they endured, and how they endured and prospered.
My Wife bought the book and has nit been able to put it down. She's first generation born in America, her Mother and Father traveled to the US in the 30's so she's very much interested in this book.
Absolutely wonderful book. If you read Catherine the Great, you will love the continuing saga with this book. Since my relatives came from the Volga area this book had a lot of meaning for me. Too bad how the Germans were treated. Be sure and read the last book "From Gulag to Freedom."
Great followup to "Catherine"....thoroughly enjoyed the way the different family members were integrated and followed... Again, the history that wraps this period, filled in a lot of blanks for me....Will read it again, I'm certain..wish there was another..
This is a wonderful book to read. The Volga Germans tried to rebuild the Volga, but were treated horribly by the Russians. This is a subject, which is not in the history books. I liked learning about the family cohesiveness and the practicality of the German people. It was sad that Russia did not realize she had a gold mine when the Germans settled around the Volga. It is a loss that Russia has not regained.
This is the second book in the series I have read. The stamina, courage and faith of the Volga Germans is inspiring. There are edge of your seat moments, sadness and exultation for their pursuance of taming this heartless country. I'd say I was glad not to live there at that time, but their hardships and faith developed such character that you do not see in today's culture. The only downfall is that it's only format is on kindle or nook. I've recommended it to elderly history buffs, but they are not into reading this type of format. What a loss for them!
